FAQ's - Frequently
Asked Questions
Q.Q. What is the price of the new Fish'N Chip? A. The MSRP for each of the 3 huge regions is US$199
Q.Q. The Fish'N Chip used to be free; why is Navionics now charging for it? A. Even though they have the same name, the free original Fish'N Chip and the new Fish'N Chip are completely different. The original Fish'N Chip only contained offshore bathymetric detail, wrecks and rocks. The new Fish'N Chip contains 1' contour detail for over 70 inshore bay/river areas of the US coasts and Great Lakes (including entire Great Lakes & St. Clair coverage of up to 1 meter contours). It also includes extensive vegetation and marsh area detail, tides & currents, critical navigation aids, and much more!
Q.Q. What is the total coverage of the new Fish'N Chip product? A. To view the coverage areas for each of the 3 regions, please click here.
Q.Q. What is the coverage for each of the hi-res inshore bay/river areas in the new Fish'N Chip? A. Please click here to download free Google Earth kmz files showing the coverage areas for all of the inshore bay/river areas featuring 1' contours (outlined in red).
Q.Q. How often will the new Fish'N Chip be updated? A. Similar to our other products, we plan to update the new Fish'N Chip every year, usually during the first quarter of the year. Updates will include applicable Notice to Mariner corrections, as well as any new detail we may have collected during the previous year.

Q.Q. Does the new Fish'N Chip still have the same great offshore coverage? A. Yes. We have included all previous Original Fish'N Chip data for all applicable areas where new 1' contour bay/river detail is not available.
Q.Q. Are marsh and vegetation areas included everywhere, even outside of the 1' contour inshore bay/river areas? A. For the East, West & Gulf coasts, yes, we do include vegetation and marsh areas continuously throughout, even in an area that does not contain 1' contours. For the Great Lakes, we include some marsh area detail, but do not currently have vegetation information available. We are always looking to add more detail to our products, so please stay tuned for updates!

Q.Q. Can I use the new Fish'N Chip to navigate? A. We have included some aids to navigation, but it is important to note that the new Fish'N Chip is designed as a high-grade fishing product and should not be used solely for navigation.
For charts built specifically for navigation, please see our Gold or Platinum+ charts catalogs.
Q.Q. Can I trade in my original Fish'N Chip for the new one? A. No. The original Fish'N Chip does not have any trade-in value since it was given away for free. However, you can trade in any purchased Navionics chart against the purchase of the new Fish'N Chip and receive the standard trade-in rebate amount. Please be cautioned that if you trade in your navigation chart for the same area, the new Fish'N Chip will provide less navigational detail.
Q.Q. My plotter is not showing marsh (blue color land areas) and/or vegetation (light green sea areas). Why? A. Some GPS plotter brands do not display all of the features of our charts. This is mainly due to software conflicts. We are working with these GPS companies to provide readability for these features in the future. For more information, please contact your GPS manufacturer.
Q.Q. Which navigation-related information is included in the new Fish'N Chip? A. Fish'N Chip navigation information includes:
- Safe-water buoy (buoys containing a single red sphere and vertical red and white stripes indicating an area of safe water)
- Recommended tracks/separation zones
- Tides & Currents
- Rocks/wrecks/obstructions
- Boat ramps
- Geonames Caution areas
Q.Q. What are the contour intervals for the new Fish'N Chip? A. All of the covered inshore bay/river areas show amazing 1' contour detail. Click here to see which estuary/bay areas are included. Outside of these areas, contour intervals range from 1' out to over 100'. Since offshore areas tend to be deeper, the contours in these areas are often spaced out further to keep our maps clear and easy to read.
Q.Q. Does the new Great Lakes Fish'N Chip include both sides of the lakes? A. Yes. All five Great Lakes (including Georgian Bay and North Channel) and St. Clair contain both the US and Canadian side in up to 1' contour detail!
