Navionics® Launches Discovery Charts - Electronic Cartography For All Outdoor Activities

New outdoor electronic charts and compatible GPS applications were on display at Outdoor 2008 in Friedrichshafen, Germany

Navionics, market leader for electronic navigation in leisure marine sports since 1984, has recently developed a new line of navigation products dedicated to outdoor activities.

A new frontier in personal navigation for all outdoor sports, Navionics electronic charts and data can potentially be exploited by any navigation tool such as GPS portable devices, web based applications, mobile phones, PDAs, and the like.

The Navionics outdoor cartographic database in Navionics new Discovery Charts includes a full set of navigation data for Europe including over 2,000,000Km of hiking and biking trails, 850,000Km of routes, 20,000Km of ski trails and lifts, 20,000 POIs, detailed marine and inland water cartography, and the complete cartography of over 420 resorts in the Alps.

Among other features, the new Discovery Charts include names and numbers, level of difficulty and length of trails, mountain peaks with heights, elevation contours, type of vegetation, and much more.

The Navionics Charts have recently been embedded into innovative applications that are readily available for consumers. Among these, the GPS outdoor maps from MapFactory™, available for Magellans’ new handheld Triton™ models, for Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria; and the Wayfinder Active™ GPS application for Germany, providing the hiking enthusiasts with a complete navigation tool for mobile phones. A complete chart package is available for the light and portable GPS - G3 from Geonav, and Discovery Charts compatibility for the new version of popular Fugawi ENC software for PCs.

The use of modern navigation technology can increase the fun of outdoor sports, by enabling the user to plan the activities that best suit their abilities, weather conditions, time, and more. It also improves situational awareness in adverse or difficult terrain, or with sudden or unpredicted changes in climate conditions.

Navionics has used its extensive 20-plus years of expertise in the manufacture of marine electronic charts to develop a new product destined to change personal navigation for outdoor and leisure activities. The outdoors person can have all the necessary data at his or her fingertips in a handy GPS device or Smart Phone instead of carrying large quantities of paper maps from different sources and at different scales.
