Navionics for the win (and 2nd)

I just participated in my first ice derby of the season with three other good friends of mine. We spoke last night as we all studied our Navionics Boating apps to find the areas we thought would be productive for targeting the massive brown trout that live in Highland Lake in Winsted, CT.

After much deliberation, we honed in on an area using the Navionics app that we would commit to during the tournament. The area featured an abrupt drop off between two shallow weeded flats, and our deliberation immediately proved fruitful.

As I was setting up my tip ups, our flags were already flying. I had landed 5 fish before my 5 traps were even properly situated. What happened next was truly special.

One of my friends yelled for me as his jigging rod doubled over. As I ran over to his aid, the drag screamed.  After a 7 minute battle, I pulled a 8.6 pound brown trout through the hole; a world-class fish. However impossible it may seem, what happened next was even more amazing.

My friend's son, Brandon Jasensky, was deadsticking a minnow on a jigging rod. Minutes after I had landed the first brown, his deadstick became extraordinarily lively.  A battle ensued as the young angler's rod bent nearly to the point of snapping, yet 12 long minutes later, a 12.8 pound brown trout surfaced through the hole.

The two massive browns caught by anglers in my group were the only two caught by the entire field comprised of nearly 250 experienced ice fishermen. Needless to say, the fish earned first and second prize, and Navionics is to thank.
