Forty-Seventh to Second: Paul Mueller and the 2014 Classic

Everyone loves an underdog story that leaves them inspired and believing that anything is possible. Paul Mueller’s story at the 2014 Bassmaster Classic is just that. The 29-year-old fishing guide from Connecticut qualified for the Classic for the first time this year by winning the B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Division. Not many people gave his entry much thought. After all, fifty-five of the best anglers were fishing the Classic, and Mueller’s 47th day one place didn’t attract much attention.

Then on Saturday, a day where six former Classic champions failed to qualify for the top 25, Mueller turned heads. He bagged a 32-pound 3-ounce limit to claim the largest single-day catch record, which sky-rocketed him from 47th to 5th! On the final day, his 24-pound limit brought him to an incredible 2nd place finish in his first Classic. A single pound more and he would have beaten Champion Randy Howell.

The average bass fan probably started asking: who is this guy? But to fellow fishermen, Mueller is fairly well-known for his on-the-water smarts and adaptability to any situation. He’s got an impressive collection of YouTube videos to prove it, too. So how did he go from 47th place on day one to snatch the runner up position? His answer to bassfan.com“eelgrass, two Lowrance units, and a Navionics Platinum card”.

Awesome.

We’re proud to have contributed to such a great moment. Congratulations, Paul!
